Since establishing in 2011, we’ve worked with over 1,500 young people from our HQ in MediaCity in Greater Manchester, UK. Opening doors to the incredible creative opportunities that surround us. 

For youth groups and schools looking to explore MediaCity, we offer a range of exciting opportunities to go behind the scenes. Whether it’s discovering how TV magic is made, meeting industry professionals, or getting hands-on with creative technology, there are plenty of ways to get involved and be inspired.

 

Behind the scenes – talk in TV Studio

Join us for a careers talk about all things telly! You’ll be invited into the TV studios at MediaCity and will have the opportunity to meet staff who work in TV, learn all about their job and get to ask lots of questions.

Activity morning or afternoon

Come along for a morning or afternoon – getting behind the scenes at MediaCity – enjoy a tour around MediaCity, with talks and Q&A sessions with industry professionals. These can be themed – sports, children’s TV, entertainment.

Activity day

Join us for a whole day and learn how to make your own content. All the young people will complete fun tasks while learning all about media. this includes an introduction to film making, scavenger hunts around MediaCity, Q&A sessions with industry experts.

Primary school visits

We welcome younger children to get to know all about the TV industry! Aimed at year 6 pupils – we’ll provide an insight into what goes on locally to where they live – an introduction to jobs that exist and what goes on behind the scenes in TV.

Reporters Academy has worked with our vulnerable cohort  aged 14 plus around self-esteem, employability and media skills. This has looked like dedicated groups of young people attending sessions over several terms, individuals supporting outside of school hours at events, Young LAC (looked after children) using their media skills to capture the LAC events/ youth voice and also bespoke packages where appropriate.  The team work in a way that above all includes the Young person in the process and with some of young LAC this has had a significant impact on school attendance, engagement and self-worth. It has  also opened the eyes of the young people involved to alternative careers and educational opportunities.  The actual programme of including the young people in such a relevant professional experience cannot be minimised as this is a chance that mainly occurs when young people are fortunate enough to enjoy either parental or school dedication that is not a luxury  of our cohort. Katy and Glynn are fantastic in responding to their individual needs and offering unique solutions to any barriers that present themselves. The young people can get hands on and the pace at which the information is shared and challenges offered works well for our young people. This has led to some memorable interview moments with the general public and demonstrated that when high expectations are the norm, supported by Glynn and Katy, young people can achieve.

The Reporters' Academy has been responsible for much of my personal and professional development since I got involved as a young volunteer over 10 years ago. As well as building my practical skills and opening up opportunities I never would have available to me otherwise, working with TRA has built my confidence and interpersonal skills and enabled me to feel comfortable in both creative and professional environments. TRA works with many young people but gives each individual the attention they need to develop in the direction they want to. For me this meant moving from experience with sports reporting, to mentoring other young people, to eventually running my own social action project as a paid member of staff. I now run my own videography social enterprise and community journalism co-op, as well as deliver training in community organising across the country, and am certain that I would not be doing what I am now without the support and opportunities afforded to me by TRA. The work they do is invaluable!
